The New Frontier of Plant-Based Meat: Tyson Challenges Beyond Meat

Published:

Tyson Foods, the largest U.S. meat producer, just challenged one of the original plant-based meat producers, Beyond Meat, by announcing their own line of meatless meat just as Beyond Meat prepares to launch their imitation burger 3.0 this week.

Tyson’s announcement for their new line of meatless meat including bratwurst, italian sausage, and ground meat follows a failed attempt at their own burger in 2019 which was later phased out due to lack of demand.

Last year saw a hit year for grocery sales, which briefly boosted US plant-basd meat sales by 45%.

Though demand for vegan meat has been cooling off after the fad last year, as the world begins to open back up post-COVID and consumers feel safer to dine out and gather again, manufacturers see an opportunity to capture additional market share.

Beyond Meat was first to market with their plant-based, vegan burgers and maintains a whopping 22% market share. Their 3rd gen burgers are rolling out this week and boast higher nutrients with less fat and calories. They also already had a line of vegan bratwurst and italian sausage.
