Grammy-Nominated R&B Icon Angie Stone Dies in Fatal Car Crash

Published:

Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone—renowned as a member of the pioneering all-female hip-hop group The Sequence and for her hit “Wish I Didn’t Miss You”—lost her life in a tragic car accident early Saturday morning at the age of 63.

According to her longtime manager and music producer Walter Millsap III, the incident occurred around 4 a.m. as she was returning to Atlanta from Alabama. He explained in an email to The Associated Press that the cargo van carrying Stone flipped over and was then struck by a large truck. Millsap confirmed that all other occupants in the van survived the crash.

The Alabama Highway Patrol reported that the 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van overturned on Interstate 65 at approximately 4:25 a.m. before being hit by a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia truck, driven by a 33-year-old man from Texas. Angie Stone was pronounced dead at the scene, with the crash occurring about 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of the Montgomery city limits.

The driver of the Sprinter and the other seven passengers were transported to Baptist Medical Center for treatment. Officials are still investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.

Millsap noted that he learned of the heartbreaking news from Stone’s daughter, Diamond, as well as from longtime The Sequence member Blondy.
