Carl Thomas Dean, the famously private husband of country music icon Dolly Parton, passed away on March 3 in Nashville at the age of 82. Dolly Parton announced the sad news on Instagram, writing:
“Carl Dean, husband of Dolly Parton, passed away March 3rd in Nashville at the age of 82. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family attending. He is survived by his siblings Sandra and Donnie.”
She added, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy,” and requested privacy during this difficult time.
Born in Nashville in 1942, Carl Dean was one of three children of Virginia “Ginny” Bates Dean and Edgar “Ed” Henry Dean. In her 1994 memoir Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business, Parton recalled how Dean was especially close to his grandmother, Minnie Bates. Not much is known about his early life, aside from the memorable moment in 1964 when an 18-year-old Dolly, newly arrived in Nashville, first met him outside a laundromat. “I was walking down the street and he hollered at me—I waved back. That day, my life changed forever,” she reminisced in earlier interviews.
Their whirlwind romance led to a spontaneous wedding in Ringgold, Georgia, in 1966, witnessed only by her mother, a pastor, and Dean’s wife.
