Culinary Union 226 Hosts ‘Strikemas’ Amidst Ongoing Picket Lines at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas

Published:

LAS VEGAS — The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 took their strike to another level yesterday, turning their demonstration outside Virgin Hotels Las Vegas into a festive but resolute “Strikemas” event. The gathering highlighted workers’ demands for fair wages, benefits, and job security while bringing holiday spirit to the picket lines.

Starting at 5 PM, the area in front of the hotel was transformed with decorated Christmas trees, tables, and a food truck providing meals for the striking workers. Porta-potties were set up to accommodate the 24/7 strike stations, and police were present to maintain order. Strikers rallied with chants and signs, blending determination with holiday cheer.

The event underscored the frustrations of over 700 hospitality workers who have been on strike since early December. TME News had the opportunity to speak with several strikers about their experiences and outlook. Pamela Holmes, a lead usher and 15-year union member, expressed her resolve: “We won’t stop until we get the contract we deserve. Virgin’s refusal to negotiate fairly is disrespectful to all the hard work we’ve put in.”

Another worker, Alain Lopez, a food server at Virgin Hotels, shared his hope for a resolution but remained skeptical about a swift end. “We see other hotels reaching fair deals, and we know it’s possible here too. But we’re prepared to stay out here as long as it takes.”

Union leadership, including Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge, continues to urge tourists, performers, and community members not to cross the picket lines. The union remains firm, condemning the hotel for using temporary replacement workers during the strike.

The festive yet defiant “Strikemas” demonstration symbolizes the solidarity and resilience of the workers during the holiday season. As the strike persists, the broader labor movement in Las Vegas watches closely, recognizing this moment as pivotal for hospitality workers’ rights across the city.
